MAN'S SECURITY VERSUS GOD'S POWER

MAN'S "SECURITY"
The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. "Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.' So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first." "Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how." So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. (Matthew 27:62-22)

GOD'S POWER
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you." So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see Me." (Matthew 28:1-10)

CAN YOU COVER UP GOD'S POWER WITH A LIE?
While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.' If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day. (Matthew 28:11-15)

THE BENEFITS OF TRUSTING IN GOD'S POWER
This is what the Lord says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord ..." "But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." (Jeremiah 17:5-8)

What are you depending on? Man's security or God's power?

THE DIRECTOR'S CORNER
A couple Saturdays ago, a carload of people was coming down from Chicago to take a look at the Camp for a possible retreat later in the year. They didn't know their way, but had gotten internet directions. (Map websites often get quite creative when given the Camp address.) Sure enough, I got a call of distress for directions. "Our directions aren't working for us--tell us how to get to Camp." I asked, "Where are you?" They didn't know. I tried to guess several possibilities for them but they couldn't confirm anything. As the conversation went on, the more powerless I felt and the more lost they felt. Finally they described a landmark I knew and I could then talk them the rest of the way.
I must admit to feelings of helplessness sometimes when trying to describe God's ways to our young people, His standard for behavior, right and wrong, eternal issues. What can I tie into in their lives? What's really important to them? Where are they? Our backgrounds may not have much in common, but we are all sinners in need of a Savior.
Pray with us as we talk our way through barriers, discover "landmarks," and make the life choices God wants us to make.
